Mount Saint Helens was 9,677 feet high. When scientists noticed a small earthquake on March 20, 1980 they decided to keep track of the movement inside the mountain. One week later Mount Saint Helens erupted for the first time in over one hundred years. It was dangerous, but nothing like what happened on May 18, 1980.
