Welcome to Mrs. Bryant's Kinder-Grand Pals Page!
Our kindergartners traveled to Larksfield Health Care Center on October 24, 2000, for our first Kinder-Grand Pals visit. Approximately twenty-five senior citizens joined us for an afternoon of learning centers.
In math our emphasis was on weight and sets of 10. We weighed gourds by balancing them against teddy bears. Many of us needed 25 or 30 bears to equal the weight of our gourd. Our pumpkins were loaded with seeds; so we sorted pumpkin seeds in sets of tens to make into a designs. We applied patterning to beads of orange, black, and white to create necklaces and bracelets for our elderly friends.
After a demonstration by artist Diane of Larksfield, we tried our hand at applying acrylic media onto small pumpkins to create a face. Kindergartners used a variety of colors and shapes. These Happy Halloween pumpkins will become our treats to our special school workers, like our night custodian Mr. Barry.
We enjoyed listening to our Kinder-Grand Pals read a variety of Halloween books to us. Kindergartners responded to questions about the stories and retold stories to the elders by "reading" the pages.
Everyone loved watching Mrs. McMenomey carve two large pumpkins and decorating our very own pumpkin-face cookie to eat before we said "good-bye" to our Kinder-Grand Pals.
Our many thanks goes to parents to drove us to and participated with us in learning centers at Larksfield Health Care Center. They were Susan Asbridge, Cynthia Bothwell, Leeanna Herman, Ruth Kile, Shari McMenomey, and our photographer Shelly Nelson. Also, we thank Janie Jones, Activities Director at Larksfield for helping plan our successful first visit.
