Principal's
Message

I’d
like to welcome you and your child to Mueller Elementary! I know many of our
students are returning students from the previous years and some of our students
are new to Mueller due to the birthday bussing lottery. We want every child
that enters Mueller to feel a part of this welcoming environment and to receive
an outstanding education from a very dedicated group of people. Please come and
visit Mueller at anytime to see the wonderful things that are occurring at our
school.
Mueller’s
program places a high emphasizes on reading, writing, and math to ensure your
child receives a quality education. Your child will receive 90 minutes of
uninterrupted time in reading. In addition to this time, your child will also
receive 30 minutes of extra instructional reading time as a part of our Tier 2
Block. This time is more individualized for students’ reading needs. Students
will also receive 60 minutes or more of math instructional time that focuses on
the math standards at each grade level. In addition to the core subjects, all
students receive 45 minutes of science and technology each week to enhance their
abilities in these areas. I encourage you and your child to check out our web
site to find out more about Mueller’s TEC Star Program.
As
many of us know, No Child Left Behind has placed a strong emphasis on the
results of our Kansas State Math and Reading Assessments given in the spring of
each year. From previous years, our fifth grade students take the reading
assessment and the fourth grade students take the math assessment. During the
last 3 years, our scores have increased in both areas. In fact, our fourth
grade students made Standard of Excellence in 2004-2005!
For
the 2005-2006 school years, the tests, grades, and areas are changing. Now,
students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will take both the reading and the math state
assessment in the spring. The state tests have also changed formats and testing
items so it will be new for everyone involved. With all the changes, this will
create a new baseline for every grade level and for each subject. We are
preparing our students for these assessments by covering standards, using web
sites that contain information regarding testing format and questions, and
practicing test taking skills.
I
encourage you to go over your student’s assignments each night, help him/her
learn their basic math facts for that grade level, and most important of all:
READ with your child every night. Doing these things with your child CAN make a
difference in what he/she can do.
Mueller’s
staff is very dedicated to your child’s education and they recognize that each
child is different. They work collaboratively with other staff members to learn
new strategies and techniques in order to enhance your child’s learning.
I
once heard, “It takes a whole village to raise a child.” To interpret this:
teachers, staff, and parents are the village. We need to work together as a
team, and we need to work collaboratively, in order to do what is best for our
children. Let’s raise these students to be the best they can be!
