Mueller Celebrates
 Bond Completion!

The school was buzzing with excitement on February 10, 2004. There were several workers in the building putting the finishing touches on. Students were completing projects they planned to share with guests at the bond celebration.

Some of Mueller's improvements completed were the addition of air conditioning, new heating, plumbing, fresh paint and new classroom doors. The biggest improvement was to our library. These improvements are certainly worth all the inconveniences the staff and students had to endure. We now know the meaning of "things have to get worse before they can get better," and they sure are better now!

Guests attending the celebration, including Tamara Cotman, Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Schools, and Michael Kinard, Board of Education President found several projects to enjoy as they toured the school.

Who was Charles P .Mueller?

Charles P. Mueller was born in Williamsville, N.Y., on June 13, 1862. Mr. Mueller came to Kansas in 1883 settling in Lawrence and then moving to Wichita later that year. At that time, there was one other florist in town who had a greenhouse. This florist and Charles Mueller became partners and built a greenhouse on West 23rd street. This partnership ended later. In 1891, Mueller relocated his greenhouse to the southwest corner of 13th and Vassar. The Charles P. Mueller Floral Co. became one of the state's largest greenhouse operations.

Charles Mueller not only had a passion for flowers, but for education as well. He served on Wichita's Board of Education for 12 years. two of those years he served as president of the Board. Mueller elementary School is named after Charles P. Mueller. Charles will always be remembered for the work he did to promote education in Wichita.

Special thanks to the Hall family for making the star cookies and to all the Mueller staff and parent volunteers, the Marketing and Communications staff and Service Center crews who helped make this celebration possible.
