Mueller is excited about the journey we are about to embark upon by becoming an Aerospace and Engineering Discovery Magnet School for the 2009-2010 school year.
Because Wichita is the "Air Capital" of the World with five major airframe manufactures located within the city, a realm of opportunities could be created for students to become future aviators and engineers in our community! What a fabulous opportunity to prepare our students for the 21st Century and get them eager to study and apply concepts in the areas of science, math, physics, technology, problem solving, algebra, flight, space, and engineering.
Our school wide program will engage students in quarterly school wide themes consisting of using technology in the implementation of science, engineering design, flight, and space and earth science.
Theme one focuses on the Engineering Design Process. Every grade level will be learning about and applying the engineering design process to hands on projects that represent their type of engineering field.
Our second theme takes the engineering design process a step further by incorporating science and technology into project based lessons. An Engineering Fair will be held in December to display several of the projects students have created by using technology and the engineering design process.
The third theme begins our journey into Flight. Students in Kdg-3rd grade will learn about the properties of air while 4th graders will learn about Bernoulli’s Principle and 5th graders will learn about Newton’s 3 Laws of Motion. All grade levels will also discuss the properties of air and how they affect flight. Along with learning these concepts, each grade level will focus on a different “aerospace” flight machine that enhances their knowledge of flight.
The fourth theme leads us into space and earth science. Again, each grade level will focus on specific standards which include: how weather affects flight in space, the solar system, different types of space transportation, and comparing life in space to earth. As a grand finale to the end of our school year, students will be able to show off projects they have created relating to aerospace and flight.
By building on these 21 century concepts, the interest in aviation and engineering would grow substantially in our students through out their school years, and into their future. Instead of looking outside of our state for “highly qualified” pilots and engineers, we could be growing and developing the very best right here in the state of Kansas!
Our students, faculty, and families are looking forward to this exciting adventure as we “Blast Off” into becoming Mueller Aerospace and Engineering Discovery Magnet!

This is my third year at Mueller as Assistant Principal, and I am thrilled to be here during the inception of our magnet program. It's exciting to see students begin to become aware of the design process, and apply it to their understanding of science and technology.
While this is my third year as an AP, I have taught several different grade levels in the past. I started as a Kindergarten teacher, which taught me that it takes a very special person to teach kiddos of that age! I quickly moved on to teaching the intermediate grades, and spent the rest of my time teaching grades 3-5.
On a personal note, I am an avid Jayhawk fan and am always on the lookout for something new to add to my office collection of KU "stuff"! One of my favorite books is, The Three Little Jayhawks, as told by Don Fambrough. It parallels The Three Little Pigs but also offers some history of Kansas and the University, it's really a must read for any Kansan.

I have enjoyed being here at Mueller for over 10 years now. My day is filled with tutoring Kindergarten readers, recess, and helping out both in the Library and Office. I have been married for over 25 years and have three great children.
