Instructor: Deborah Harris
Students will present their own musicals this year: All programs are at Mueller at 7:00 p.m. These programs are fully staged, costumed and choreographed productions by the children and music teachers. A professionally produced video tape or DVD of each performance is available for purchase (proceeds go to music department for future productions).
Mueller Meisterringers Handchime Ensemble: The Meisterringers have performed at the B.O.E. Retirement Banquets, at the Wichita All-City Honor Choir concerts, at the Riverfest Galaxy Showcase Festival and for retirement centers, hospitals and nursing homes.
Theory and a historical study
of composers is done by the 4/5th grades each year:
Each student receives a journal of
several major composers which includes biographies, worksheets, games, listening
maps and photos. Usually a video accompanying each study of a particular
composer is seen to bring a composer’s history to life!
Our newest innovation is our Yamaha Clavinova Digital Keyboard Lab: This lab consists of 14 full-size digital pianos that are connected to the teacher’s Clavinova CVP 92 piano. Two students sit at a piano and have headphones in which to hear teacher instruction and themselves. The students learn to play simple piano pieces with accompaniments from a disk that is played from the teacher’s console. Recording capabilities and computer interaction are also possible with these keyboards.
In addition to our lab,
students in grades 3-5 learn to play recorders:
The recorder is an ancestor of the flute, but is played more like a clarinet. We
use Yamaha soprano recorders in class. Recorders can be purchased through the
music department for $8.00 (for their personal use) or students may borrow a
music class recorder for classroom use only. *Recorders make great
"stocking stuffers"!
