The Mueller art program is a specific
part of the T.E.C. STAR program designed to introduce fine art objectives
into our students' lives. Mueller kindergarten through fifth grade
students go to art class once a week for fifty minutes where the
art teacher works with them on special art projects. Students
also receive many other fine art experiences from classroom teachers
and support staff as shown below.
As Mueller students enter the art room, they start at their group tables to listen to
the teacher's directions. The art teacher shares background information
about famous artists and art around the world with students before
moving into the weekly lesson which follow the Wichita Public
School's art objectives. Lessons can include working with lines,
shapes, colors, perspectives, shading, different mediums such
as paper/pencil or paper mache, and art appreciation. Lessons
gradually become more and more in depth as students get older
and are able to put their previous knowledge into use. As students
finish each project, the art teacher makes up a group display
to put up somewhere in the school for all to see.
School wide, teachers work together in team and cross-curricular
projects that incorporate
the fine arts. Grade level teachers and teams share monthly themes
and display the final examples of student work in the halls school
wide. Students from the art class help develop music backdrops
for musicals that other grades are performing. As you visit Mueller,
you will quickly get a 'warm' feeling from seeing student work
displayed outside classroom doors that incorporate math, reading,
and writing into art displays.
Fine arts are an important part of Mueller's focus on providing a comprehensive education
for students, Elementary students need to have a well rounded
education to gain many experiences when they are still exploring
what they like to do in life. Art examples of this at Mueller
include participation with grade level field trips followed by
art projects and student generated Kid Pix computerized pictures
and stories back at the building, in the City Arts program with
third graders where they experience four different art projects
in one day, and with the Wichita Arts Project in which fifth grade
students take a city art sculpture tour on a bus followed by an
art project at Mueller (their 1998-99 project was the main entry
way stained glass window!) to share what they learned with others.

You can also see how we have integrated our technology program
with the arts over the web by checking out our Kid's
Stuff menu bar link. Student work is important at Mueller
and we want to share with others what we are doing.
