Mueller students
are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior at all times. Disrespect, fighting, and misbehavior
are not allowed at school. A school wide Code of Conduct, which
is shared with parents during enrollment, outlines student behavior
expectations.
On a day to day basis, students are encouraged to understand how
their choices affect their learning. Good choices result in positive results whereas
poor choices may have negative consequences. As students learn
how their behaviors determine what happens, they are more likely
to take charge of their behaviors in the future. This approach
recognizes that students are responsible for their actions rather
than treating misbehavior with punishments that may not address
the problem.
Classrooms
try to win the Golden Behavior Award each week. Each class takes a behavior
chart to specials (Library, Computer Lab, Music, Art, P.E. and Science) where
they receive a score between 1-4 based on the overall behavior of the class.
Students may also be given an individual score so one student's behavior won't
affect the overall class score. Behavior charts are collected and scores are
figured on Thursday afternoon. One class in each hallway with the highest score
will win the Golden Behavior Award. The winners are announced on the Friday
morning newscast. Prizes include: an extra 20 minute recess, a small treat
and the Golden Behavior Torch to hang outside their classroom for a week.
Students attend a 'Behavior Assembly' during the first weeks of
school where school behavior
expectations are shared, teachers are introduced, and new/returning
students are welcomed back to another learning year. Assembly
behavior (i.e., walking in quietly, listening to the speaker,
and showing respect) is encouraged and actively taught during
these times. Incentives for good behavior such as the
'Star
of the Week' coupons are used school wide as well as other
student incentive programs.
