Reading Is Fundamental
![]()
Mueller Elementary is part of
the federally funded Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) program that distributes free books to elementary
students based on the numbers of free/reduced students. RIF programs
are set up twice a year for students to go to the library, participate
in a fun and educational learning activity, and then choose a
free book to take home and keep.
Mueller's first RIF program is set up in the fall with a Story Book
Character theme during Halloween. Instead of the traditional Halloween
costumes, students are asked to wear Story Book Character costumes
for the day that show off their favorite books. Some students
even bring their books with them for the day. As students rotate
through the library, they can show off their costumes, hear from
our librarian about her favorite books, and, at the end of the
day, participate in a school wide Story Book Character parade
outside followed by classroom parties inside. Everyone has a lot
of fun and the parents enjoy seeing some creative costumes based
on favorite books.
The second RIF theme
is set up sometime in spring. The topic can focus on Presidents'
birthdays, special days, or whatever creative idea the librarian
and RIF team pick. If you are interested in helping with our RIF
planning and distributions, please call us at 973-8300.
