Mueller Elementary is a school of choice for the Wichita Public
School system. Although we are not officially a magnet school
(we're the desegregation school for the district), our T.E.C.
STAR program is one of the programs shown at the yearly Choice's
Fair in January where magnet and special programs are featured
for Wichita. Parents and students who attend have the opportunity
to look at some top-notch school programs and volunteer to attend
that school the following year based on space availability.
Mueller's 600 enrollment demonstrates that good teachers,
a strong academic program, and a fine reputation really do make
a difference in student learning. Our teachers care for students,
have high academic expectations, and communicate with parents.
Our T.E.C. STAR program encompasses
many curriculum areas that parents want their children to master.
Mueller's reputation initially started with its hands-on
science lab but has expanded into a quality school where students
are expected to learn. Many of our students who attend the first
year volunteer to return through their fifth grade elementary
year.
So, how does the process work? In January, Mueller students
receive a volunteer letter asking if they are planning to return
the following year. (We had over 75% return this last year!) Based
on the return rate, we create as many openings as needed to fill
class sizes for the following year. These openings are then filled
through Choice's Fair volunteers in February (call us at 973-8300
with your student's name and information) followed by the Birthday
Lottery in March for the rest of the openings. These students
are then placed into classes in August during enrollment to begin
their Mueller experience. A couple of openings occur in August
but it is best to volunteer early to ensure getting in to the
program.
We would like to encourage you to visit us during Visitation
Week in January/February to see our school and learn more
about our T.E.C. STAR program.
We
are out to win you over to Mueller!
