WAYS TO STIMULATE YOUR CHILD’S
SPEECH-LANGUAGE SKILLS OVER THE
SUMMER

- At dinner time, take turns talking around the table by passing the salt
shaker. Whoever has the salt shaker, it is that person’s turn to talk.
This will work on taking turns.
- Take your child grocery shopping and talk about the different kinds of
foods at the grocery store. This will target categories, similarities,
differences, and associations.
- Read stories to your child then act out the story.
- If your child received speech-language services for articulation, practice
the sounds during interactive play for five minutes a day.
- Play rhyming games with your child. For example, using the duck, duck,
goose game Choose a rhyming family (at family). Everyone sits in a circle
and one person walks around and taps on each person’s head an at rhyme
(rat, hat, cat, sat, mat, fat, bat) when the person says a word that doesn’t
rhyme with the at family that person is the goose and has to chase the other
person around the circle.
Have your child make a peanut butter sandwich. Your child needs to tell you
what you need and how to do it. This works on sequencing and following
directions.
